Celebrate National Grandparents Day

National Grandparents Day is commemorated yearly the Sunday after Labor Day, and is a day everyone is encouraged to "Do Something Grand". This can take many different forms for different people, young and old. By providing wisdom, perspective and core values to our youth, or by simply connecting with grandparents and older adults in the community, each of us can do our part to do grand deeds.

While most people honor their grandparents year-round, this year will have a special significance to Katie and her grandmother, Cora. Following surgery earlier this year, Cora required home care assistance to continue her daily hygienic routines, cook her meals, and remind her to take her medications. Katie's parents worried that an outsider could seem intrusive to Cora, who had been an independent, strong-willed woman until the surgery.

Katie, who has always had a special relationship with her grandmother, researched options on her behalf, and learned that she could become Cora's Personal Assistant under Medicaid's CDPAP. Not only would she be paid to help her grandmother with her daily living routines, she would be able to retain her flexibility and continue her studies at community college, located close to Cora's home.

Katie and Cora now honor one another daily. Cora imparts great wisdom and has provided insight on their long family history. Together Katie and Cora have pieced together an intricate family tree, going back four generations. On Sunday, September 10, Cora's family will "Do Something Grand" by hosting a special multi-generational celebration at her home to unveil the family tree.
