Memorial Day: Unofficial Start of Summer

Summer is finally here! At least that's what most people associate with Memorial Day, the "unofficial" kick-off of summer!

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. While many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries, or by holding family gatherings and participating in parades to commemorate the passing of military service members, unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Did you know that each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time?

On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

Happy Memorial Day!
