Celebrate Independence Day!

There are so many ways to celebrate our nation's Independence Day, ranging from traditional backyard barbecues to watching fireworks on national TV, everyone should be able to enjoy the holiday.

Those who are mobile and enjoy outdoor events may find participating in traditional activities with friends and family can boost their spirits and reinforce their sense of community. If attending outdoor events, it's important to limit sun exposure by staying in the shade, wearing sunscreen, a hat, and even protective clothing. Insect repellant is also a good idea, especially as dusk descends. Bring along a comfortable cushion to sit on, or a portable chair or wheelchair if necessary, to alleviate fatigue. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and remember to take regular bathroom breaks.

If you need assistance, make sure your loved ones or health aides are aware of these precautions to keep you safe.

Caregivers should also be aware that patients with Alzheimers or dementia may become overtired or overstimulated easily, so time spent at large gatherings should be limited to avoid agitation, anxiety or angry outbursts.

For those who prefer to stay indoors, playing or singing patriot tunes, engaging in red-white-and-blue arts and crafts projects, even preparing traditional foods like hot dogs, hamburgers, delicious summer salads, fresh fruits, and ice cream, can make this holiday "Yankee-Doodle-Dandy"!

And don't miss out on spectacular fireworks displays, whether you attend them live or catch them on TV, Uncle Sam's celebration is always a spectacle worth seeing.

Happy 4th of July!
