Are You Up to Date with Cancer Screening?

Although screenings for breast, prostrate, cervical and colon cancer can save lives, the number of Americans who undergo cancer screenings is below target levels, according to U.S. health officials.

The shortfall may be attributed to a lack of health insurance and a failure to seek routine medical care by a growing number of individuals who have not seen a doctor in the last year. In addition, Asians, younger folks, the poor and the less educated are also less likely to get cancer screenings.

While doctors regularly recommend cancer screenings, some patients may be confused by the purpose of the screenings and may be reluctant to follow through because they do not have any related symptoms or family history of cancer. This could prove to be a fatal mistake, because early detection is important to overall treatment and eventual remission, regardless.
