Taxes Are Due Today! Happy Patriot's Day

Today is the deadline to file your 2018 income taxes. If you waited until the last minute to file your, a parent’s or senior loved one’s taxes, you may still file for and get an extension.

The penalties for not filing are higher than not paying taxes, however, so don't miss a filing deadline if you owe taxes. Even if you can't pay your taxes on time, the late filing penalties are generally significantly higher than the not paying taxes on time penalties.

The IRS recommends avoiding these 9 common mistakes when filing your returns.

  1. Missing or inaccurate Social Security numbers

  2. Misspelled names

  3. Filing status errors

  4. Math mistakes

  5. Errors in figuring tax credits or deductions

  6. Incorrect bank account numbers

  7. Forms not signed

  8. Electronic filing PIN errors

  9. Filing with an expired Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Patriot's Day is also celebrated today in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine. It’s a very New England holiday, and although it is most often associated with the running of the Boston Marathon, it commemorates events that occurred on April 19, 1775 in Concord and Lexington that would launch the then colonies into an eight-year war with Great Britain and lead to the formation of the United States of America.
